Emma Pilipon distills out her own mainstream world out of American pop culture. A place filled with dreams and self-fulfillment. No Fate is the title of Pilipon’s large-scale performance that will be presented at Lilith Performance Studio December 8-11.
In four rooms side by side: a TV –studio, two girl’s rooms and a bar, the audience can observe four parallel stories. In each room a short course of event is repeated, like favorite film cuts taken from TV- series or easily digested Hollywood productions. The recognition is a fact, we have seen this before. These banal scenes tell us the goal is yet to be reached, hope is still there, dreams still alive. In one of the rooms the artist herself is acting, by imitating a body movement inspired by her own self-fulfillment and the dream to be someone else.
Emma Pillipon has been presented before at Lilith’s performance festivals, latest with the performance Bad Media Karma (2008), where Pilipon created a remake of the reality. She recreated an arranged occurrence, which at the time referred to reach medial visibility. Made up and dressed as the megastar Britney Spears Pilipon arrives in a white limousine to a packed Lilith Performance Studio. 30 paparazzi appear and pursue the star with flashing cameras through the crowd and further in to the restroom. She makes a swift visit and then she returns to the limo and leaves the space.
Emma Pilipon’s big fascination and working material are the things that often are looked upon as shallow and banal. With a sharp eye for details and a genuine interest she adopts the stories of celebrities life’s, the clichés and the kitsch in magazine journalism and invent it to her own narratives. She creates something universal and welcoming of the things we usually keep a distance to or dismiss.
Lilith Performance Studio is the first combined production studio and arena for visual art
performance in Europe. The studio originates new large-scale performances by inviting visual artist to create exceptional performance pieces in a close collaboration with the Studio, from conceptualization to presentation.
